Starting From Scratch

”If I were starting over, I'd get this, this and this...”

We all love to start from scratch.

But, I often see the start get off on the wrong foot as it can be daunting (and expensive) to have to buy all new gear.

So what’s our instinct when faced with such an important task?

It’s to head to the sale rack, baby!

It might be a sport coat or a trouser from a brand heard about from your co-worker’s wife.

And, even though it doesn’t go with anything you own, it looks interesting and is too good of a deal to pass up.

Plus, it already has social proof. (my buddy wears it!)

The allure of a slick purchase vanishes when you realize you need a different shade of pants to compliment that cheap sport coat.

Or a new shirt to go with that incredible steal of a trouser.

Now, you’ve spent a fair amount to accommodate this amazing find only to realize you have one or two complete outfits that must be worn together.

Yikes.

When that has run its course, you feel the need to buy something else.

But now you need something that goes with the things you bought to go with the thing you didn’t really want in the first place but got it because — SALE!

My advice.

Start out buying things that go with everything you already own.

Variety is overrated - and expensive.

We all want to start from scratch sometimes.

But, it’s time to re-think our approach to buying clothes.

Plus, you’ll look better in the end.

And that’s the goal, right?
