Smart Denim

As we continue the casual trend for the foreseeable future, one question I receive quite a bit is how accepted are jeans now, especially in work environments? And, if so, any tips on pulling them off in a way that feels “smarter”?

To be clear, when in doubt, I’d definitely lean toward being overdressed than under. So first meeting with the new boss, I’d keep it pretty formal.

That being said, don’t fight the new era. Here are a few bullet points on the approach.

1/ Keep It Simple — basics win here. Avoid worn effects and rips; this will tip you way too far to the casual side.

2/ Go Darker — The lived-in look of light-wash denim is great for weekends but will feel out of place in a smart setting. I’d go with unwashed dark indigo or dark gray. These will be a little sturdier as well, creating a sharper silhouette.

3/ Invest in A Sport Coat — The trusted sport coat is your best friend when it comes to dressing up some denim. Make it unstructured in fit and matte in finish. (no suit jackets)

4/ Strike Balance — If the top half of your look is smart - say sport coat and fitted shirt, you have to lend some support to the denim with a nice pair of shoes. These could be “out of the box” trainers to boots or even something like a suede double monk. You’ll know when you’ve hit it. Just don’t make them too dressy or too casual - cool?

5/ Fit is Always First — A more structured fit looks smarter than loose jeans. Go straight leg and slim, not skinny. The straight leg also works best for your athletic types — no need to see the keys in your pocket.

6/ Choose Textured Counterparts — Denim is a workwear textile, so it goes well with other textured fabrics. Oxford cloth, wool, cotton, etc. Shiny, formal fabrics will make you look out of place. Basically, the jeans can’t stand in for your suit trousers.
