Issue # 1 - January 2023 - Optimism -
Thank you so much for joining the club. This project is evolving, and I’d love to get honest feedback. Any questions/ideas/thoughts etc., are highly encouraged.
We’re in this together. LFG!!!
As you can guess, this month’s theme is OPTIMISM.
Something is inspiring about new beginnings.
Perhaps it’s the hope for the better.
A change in a positive direction.
Whatever it is, I can feel it, and I’m super pumped you’re here.
This month the Sporting Club is built around a new you. A new start. A time for change.
Look better naked - Look better dressed.
Let’s get into it.
THE SOUNDTRACK
Following the theme of Optimism, I want to provide you with a very inspiring playlist curated by ASC member Mr. Brandon Cullen.
He says, “All these songs have a big meaning to me. Each track starts a bit slow and sad but builds towards a better and more joyful ending.”
About Brandon: In search of life’s [im]perfect soundtrack, Brandon brings an edgy approach to entrepreneurship through his valuable experience as a professional athlete turned business owner. Brandon hosts the entrepreneurial-inspired podcast PlayingGuilty and is the Co-Founder and Chief Concept Officer of MADabolic - the industry’s premiere strength-driven interval franchise.
I imagine ASC member Dave Carr driving through the mountains in his air-cooled Porsche blasting the track Quiet - This Will Destroy You.
Amen.
Just click play; it’s a fantastic listen.
DAVID’S 3 STYLE RULES FOR 2023
Let’s kick off 2023 with A few resolutions rules to consider DAILY this year. There are only 3 for a reason. Execute.
-
Quit being so precious: Men’s clothing should get beaten up. Don’t avoid things like white denim because you’re too scared to get them dirty. Embrace it. It adds character. Patch that hole in your suit. Tell a great story about it. Wear suede in the rain (I’ll link an excellent protecting spray below) 2023, we’re going to live on the edge, baby!
-
This is the quickest way to become confident. To be well-dressed, commit to a uniform. Have a go-to drink. Pick a cologne you can wear year-round. Not only will all of this reduce decision-making, but now you have a perspective. And that is pure confidence. “In the short term, you are as good as your intensity. In the long term, you are as good as your consistency.”
-
This will solve 90% of your style problems. Tip your tailor well; they will become your best mate.
THIS MONTHS LINKS
A collection of items worthy of a purchase, a read, or an action.
-
A Shopping Guide to Ready-Made Trousers - A comprehensive read on buying ready-to-wear (off-the-rack) trousers. Fits are complex…this should make it somewhat easier.
3D Maps Showing Populations - Not sure why this was so interesting, but the visuals rock. Scroll through this Twitter feed. I’m always impressed by how much time people spend on projects that are free to peruse.
The Shocking New Truth About Weight Loss, Calories & Diets - The title says it all. But this was pretty fascinating. Especially his thoughts on the weakness of calorie counting (17:39). Is anyone else looking to shed a few? 🙋♂️
Stutz - Maybe the most crucial topic in this list. Start watching the documentary on Netflix, then get his book The Tools.
MADOFF : The monster of Wall Street — Man, I’m so fascinated with a good Ponzi scheme. The sheer amount of money involved blows my mind.
G. Bruce Boyer on the Raglan Coat - A deep editorial dive on the Raglan Sleeve Overcoat. “For all but very dressy occasions, this is a perfect overcoat for town, country, and travel. Always has been.”
Denim Wash Guide via 3Sixteen - The best guide I’ve seen on washing your selvage denim.
Day One Journal App - This, by far, has been my favorite app lately. I downloaded this when my son was born (5 years ago) to document that experience. I took and uploaded tons of pictures, then honestly forgot about it. Recently club member John H. and I were talking, and he mentioned using it daily to journal and document life. I got back into it and am so glad I did. It is robust and only $25 a year. Amazing.
Pinecrest Printery - I get asked about my business and thank you cards quite a bit. Here is the source. Nothing like an old-school letterpress to set you apart from the rest. Based in Winston Salem.
9 Men’s Fashion Trends To Leave Behind In 2023 - They had me at “wispy mustaches”. 😂
BAMF Style - Ever see something in a flick, and you NEED to know what it is? Check BAMF. Iconic and interesting men's fashions from movies and TV. (It’s a rabbit hole of goodness - you are warned.)
33 Ways to Get Back On Track in 2023 - I can’t argue with any of this. “Make exercise a daily event” is on my list.
Die, Workwear! - Best follow on IG.
-
G9 Original Slim-Fit Suede Harrington Jacket - Listen - leather and suede jackets are hard. But if you can get the right one with the right fit, you’ll def be a leg up. This one is on sale and sharp. It was made famous by the one and only Steve McQueen.
Green Polo Neck Ribbed Sweater - This color is often overlooked but works well with denim, navy pants, gray pants, etc. ABBEYDALE makes these, or this one is from David A Cashmere. Def something to consider for this winter or next holiday season.
A Gentleman's Over Shirt - Yes, it's rugged but has a certain European refinement. This makes sense, considering it's from the French label Cuisse de Grenouille. Designed in Paris but stitched by master shirtmakers in Portugal, it's tailored for a modern boxy fit without looking baggy or oversized. The heavy wide-wale corduroy has the perfect weight for the colder months and can be worn in myriad ways—from tossed over a T-shirt with sweats to layered over a lightweight sweater for a night out.
Custom Casual Jacket via ABBEYDALE - Everyone could use a chore coat. You might as well get one custom-made. Dig this wool cotton + cashmere version. Remember, as a member, you get 10% off. I’ll post mine on the IG account for more info.
S.E.H Kelly Field Coat - Sublime. Why do I like it so much? The firmness of the cotton sail cloth helps the collar stand up without so much as a hint of droop. It keeps the wind off the neck and chin, and because of the brushed nature of the cloth, it is especially warm and comfortable on the skin.
WYTHE Pearl Snap Western - Damnit. The moleskin got me again. I love this for an evening out, drinking, and watching a local band.
Universal Works Carlton Gilet - Sure, gilet is a fancy word for a vest, but this one is solid. You’re better than Peter Millar.
Aspesi Giacca Emile Jacket - For all of you travelers out there.
Wax London Cardigan - Not grandpas cardi. Is it a jacket or a sweater? Who cares, office or casual ready?
-
3Sixteen Fatigue Pant - This pant silhouette features a straight leg, higher rise, and roomy top block. It's made of a heavyweight Japanese HBT fabric that's been mill washed for a softer, broken-in hand while still being hefty—made in the USA.
Carhartt Slim Fit WIP Pants - We all need work pants, but surprised how many guys aren’t aware of the Carhartt Work In Progress line. A slimmer fitting, more fashion-forward presentation. Big on collaborations.
Incotex Cargos - I wish I could dump my love for cargo pants…but here we are again. These trousers look great with a fine knit or overshirt for weekend outings. Constructed in heavy wool, slim enough for the office and has plenty of room for storage.
Tellason Chino - A no-frills, simple, slim-fit chino.
Lulu Lemon Training Shorts - I always want to hate LuLu - mainly because they love a logo…but these are sharp. The colorway is unique as well.
-
The Only Boot You Will Need This Winter - Man, these have a removable shearling lining. Toasty! Also, waterproof. NEED. I went to work on a farm last weekend helping a buddy lay some fencing, and welp; my soft ass didn’t have good waterproof workboots. These are the ones I’ll be getting quickly.
Common Projects Canvas White Tournament Low - Does anybody need a solid canvas sneak for the coming Spring? On sale and has a good range of sizes left. *On Sale
Anglo-Italian X Crockett + Jones - Great lineup of classic loafers, brogues, and boots. Rugged for function and refined for fashion. Hard to pull off. They did it.
Astorflex Rampiflex Boot - Favorite boot of the moment. I stole Dave C’s thunder here but had to share. Like Clark’s Wallabee but more comfortable.
-
Engineered Garments Moleskin Tote - My love for a good tote continues and is even better when heavily discounted. I love the moleskin makeup, and the army green colorway is right in my wheelhouse. IT HAS A SHOULDER STRAP! CLUTCH. *On Sale
Technics AZ70 - Incredible deal on these wireless headphones. Buddy swears by them (I’m still on the air pod game). But these are smooth. *On Sale
CABLEAMI Cashmere Knit Beanies - CABLEAMI began in Kobe, Japan, in 2008, with a name inspired by the Alan Cable knitting pattern. "Ami" in Japanese means "knit,” and in French, it means "friend" Those two themes create the philosophy around the brand, interweaving good fit, unique design, and traditional-casual elements. Plenty of great colors to choose from.
Anderson & Sheppard Cashmere Gloves - It’s going to get cold, cold soon. These will do the trick.
Drakes Collection of Scarfs - A scarf's ability to tie an outfit together should never be underestimated. Go with this one if you’re not sure where to start.
-
Todd Snyder - Probably too much here to list…any questions, ask!
SUNSPEL - They are having their winter sale - up to 60% off. Awesome tees! I endorse the quality.
TABOR - Our good friends over at Charlotte’s men's store go on sale starting today. Great deals to be had!
Taylor Richards Conger - The gents at TRC are on sale for up to 50% off. Dig in.
No Man Walks Alone - Curated NYC shop with classics and some forward-thinking brands. Winter sale is on.
Mr. Porter - So so much here. It can be overwhelming but probably the biggest menswear site on the planet. Questions? Let me know.
-
Heavy Duty Copper Mugs - Nothing like a manly copper cup to drink your skinny Moscow mule. 😛 Few highlights here: Copper will oxidize over time, developing a handsome patina. The large handle is purpose-built for a manly grip. The sturdy silhouette looks right at home, hanging in the kitchen or around the campfire.
Billy Reid x Williams Sanoma - Did you know menswear designer Billy Reid has a new collection with Williams Sonoma? Manly glassware + accessories that the ladies will love. A few standouts are the Oyster Knife and, of course, the flask!
A Guide To Non-Toxic Cookware - I love someone who does all the research for me. The search function on Twitter (and Reddit) are excellent. I’m in the market for new cookware (I want to dump the non-stick coatings that constantly break down). This comprehensive thread was on time for me.
-
Best Men’s Shops in Nashville - This dude lives in Tennessee and carries a blog about Menswear. Here are some great shops to check out if you are headed that way.
Piaule Catskill - The IG algorithm got me…but look at this place. Unique cabins, a spa, and a restaurant make this a hell of a weekend. I chalk this up to the someday category.
David Coggins Favorite Travel Destinations - Menswear writer who travels rather extensively. Great list that breaks down places to eat, view art, and something we all have in common - shop!
Emara.tc - I had the pleasure of staying at Emara (Prince’s former Turks and Caicos estate) this summer. AD did this write-up on it. Words can’t describe how amazing it was. Hey, maybe we’ll have an ASC retreat here one day! One can dream.
How To Pack Suits for Travel - Author Simon Crompton gives his advice on how to pack jackets, trousers, and suits for travel – plus the essentials he always carries.

Abbeydale: a Look Ahead
Knitwear...for summer?
That’s right: the modern man’s wardrobe becomes more charismatic and comfortable with a few carefully selected summer knits at his disposal. For example, in cotton & cashmere, our newest yarn quality. Breezy, lightweight, and moisture absorbing, this unique quality’s use of 85% cotton keeps you carefree and comfortable even in temperatures above 86°F. Its 15% cashmere treats your skin to a luxuriously soft touch.
Perfect for any model with short sleeves, including (and especially) our newest knitwear model: the straight T-shirt. Featuring a more casual, relaxed fit, a crew-style neckline, and elastic-free hems on the sleeves and body, our new knit T-shirt will immediately elevate your weekend ensembles and tone down your more tailored, intelligent casual looks.
Plus, your options don’t stop there.
Your extra-fine merino wool and cashmere & silk qualities are also highly wearable as temperatures rise — the former a durable, four-season mix of softness and breathability, the latter the plushest, lightweight quality of all.
I’m excited to share these new pieces with you, and as a Club member, you’ll get first dibs.
Feel free to book an appointment to check them out.
Until next Month! Thanks again for your time and attention.
I’ll see you in the comments on Instagram or the blog.
As always, email or text (704) 737-4274 with any questions!
