Trying to describe (even to yourself) your style can be a daunting task. Breaking it down to a few signifiers or adjectives of your unique look helps.
Giving ourselves a simple framework to get our thoughts together about our personal style will help in many ways, from editing everything that isn’t conforming to your three-word identity to informing future purchase decisions.
I think we can all benefit from this process, particularly if you have a bunch of clothes but feel like you have nothing to wear.
Here is a quick process that may help identify your three words.
Think back to outfits that felt wholly, essentially "you" — or, better yet, take pictures of yourself when you feel most stylish. Isolate which clothing items you wear all the time. Write down words that come to mind. No complex rules here; get creative.
OK, so yeah, this isn’t easy — mainly because it feels overwhelming, but remember, as your style evolves, so can your words.
Mine — for now, = Fit, Sprezza, Simple.
Fit - I’m probably not wearing it if it doesn't fit well.
Sprezza - short for Sprezzatura or the Italian translation of disheveled elegance. This has been a constant for me. Nothing too tidy.
Simple - because I like a uniform. Simple usually translates to classic…and modern. I’ll take both.
So, what three words would you choose to describe your personal style?

Put this on (the men’s style blog) had a great article asking the question, “What makes an heirloom?”
Ever since I read that, I’ve considered future purchases that can last a few lifetimes.
Their article focused on watches, which are great pieces to hand down. But what else?
My suits/shirts over the last six years have all been monogrammed with Chief’s initials. Because, hey, they’ll be his one day anyway.
Lapo Elkann famously wears his stylish great-grandfather's (Gianni Agnelli) suits. You know they are well made and classic if still relevant today.
My favorite jacket is my dad’s M-65 from when he served. That thing is over 50 years old…and still crushes.
If we begin to think about timeless heirlooms with our purchases, I bet we’d buy better….and less.
Something to consider!

Drawing inspiration from Admiral James Stockdale's astounding survival in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp, Jim Collins popularized a valuable concept known as the Stockdale Paradox, which stands as a crucial lesson for achieving success in the business (AND REAL) world.
The Stockdale Paradox offers a technique to navigate through challenging and uncertain times by embracing two seemingly opposing perspectives. Firstly, it entails confronting your current situation's harsh and brutal realities, and acknowledging the difficulties and obstacles without denial or evasion. Secondly, it involves maintaining unwavering faith and confidence that, eventually, you will overcome these challenges and emerge triumphant, regardless of how distant that victory may seem.
Stockdale's own story is an extreme testament to the power of this paradox. When his plane was shot down during a raid on North Vietnam, he found himself in enemy territory, fully aware that his captivity could extend for at least five years. As events unfolded, he endured over seven years of imprisonment, facing relentless torture, denial of medical attention, solitary confinement, and even resorting to self-inflicted harm to avoid being used for propaganda purposes.
As the highest-ranking officer in the infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' prisoner of war camp, Stockdale witnessed numerous fellow captives succumb to despair and give up. Yet, he persevered through his ordeal by adhering to the principles of the Stockdale Paradox. In an interview with Jim Collins, he said, "I never lost faith in the end of the story. I never doubted that not only would I eventually escape, but I would also prevail and transform this experience into a defining event of my life, one I wouldn't trade even in retrospect."
This remarkable tale offers a profound lesson—one must never confuse unyielding faith in ultimate triumph with the necessity to confront the brutal realities of the present. Both aspects are indispensable and, when combined, form a powerful approach to persisting through pain and uncertainty, leading to remarkable achievements and resilience in the face of adversity.

Madewell’s Fall Lookbook - Is Madewell men’s good? Some nice inspo in these pics for the upcoming Fall season.
Tight Pants - When I look at my old skinny jeans, I think of only this now.
What’s Hot In The Vintage Watch Market Now? - Amazing how often I end up talking watches in the shop when I clearly know nothing about the industry. Articles like this keep me somewhat relatable. Maybe not. Who knows!
Peter Atia’s Longevity Plan (13 Steps) - Longtime fan. I recently read his book OUTLIVE…but here are the steps in summary.
-
Todd Snyder Studio Coat -- Awesome sales price. Great color (green is so underrated). The Studio Coat combines a chore jacket and a blazer — part practical, part tailored, and completely versatile.
Anglo-Italian Field Shirt - AI’s Field Shirts are designed to be paired with most of their other offerings, from denim to t-shirts or pleated trousers and button downs. Constructed with two inverted pleated pockets which sit flush to the chest as well as side entry, external patch pockets. Highly functional yet fashionable piece if you ask me.
The Real McCoy’s Gusset Tee - The Gusset Tee is a 50s-inspired athletic tee made from an 8oz cotton cloth. Like the best vintage gusset tees, the gusset details featured here have been sewn in; whilst this is a time-consuming process, this adds a layer of reinforcement and prevents the neck from stretching and acting similarly to a sweatband.
Beams+ Cut Off Sweatshirt - Light enough for summer, but substantial enough to take you into fall. Cut from an incredibly soft, washed loopback jersey material, it's got a relaxed, vintage-inspired fit with raglan shoulders. And while the sleeves have been cut off, the hems have surged stitching to prevent any fraying.
Exodus Shepherds Shirt in Phantom - A technical zip-up, snap-closed, antimicrobial, lightweight, silver-infused version of their best-selling Shepherds Shirt. This is the Phantom Colorway which is inspired by the rich shades of blue water surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. I love the collar!
-
Ten Thousand A-L Short - I love the product these guys put out. They have a new all-purpose short. Designed for those who train to live, the A—L Short is comfortable and functional enough to take you through a busy day around town or your next epic adventure.
Alex Mill Flat Front Short in Vintage Washed Chino - Down the middle of the fairway chino shorts that's been pre-washed and beat up for ya. I also love the fact it's an old-school cotton fabric WITHOUT stretch. They also added tabs at the waist, key for a more tailored-to-you fit.
Duck Camp Co. 5” Shorts - Like Patagonia Baggies but with some exciting designs. I’m in.
The Real McCoy’s Camo Civilian Short - TRM remakes vintage pieces precisely. A comfortable and practical fit with a medium rise that benefits from waist adjuster tabs, a urea button closure, and buttoned rear patch pockets. Read more about the origin of the camo via the link!
Exodus Scallop Boardie in Ti Leaf - An amphibious short with seamless construction built for work and play. This is the Emerald colorway which is inspired by the lush jungles of the Hawaiian Islands.
Ghiaia Marinaio Cotton Double Pleated Pants - Cotton Ghiaia trousers are cut from a cotton-blend twill in a high waist double pleated silhouette. Classic look, four pockets construction, and are finished with Ghiaia genuine horn buttons. I know this may be a stretch for some of you, but I’ve embraced the pleated life lately. It reminds me of my grandad, who was THE coolest cat.
-
LL Bean X Todd Snyder Collab - Todd chose one of the most iconic pieces from the L.L.Bean Archive, then reinvented it with a modern sensibility, premium materials, and a tailored fit. I'd wear these with denim, chinos, utility pants, and shorts. *On Sale*
Clarks Desert Boot in Black Suede - Longtime Clarks fan here, and it's rare to see all blacks go on sale. Great shoe to start prepping for #FallFIts
Earth Runners Elemental Sandals - OK, hear me out. I’m going all hippy on you guys, but these are awesome. I was looking for a new flip-flop for the beach when my buddy Kris rolled up in these. They are way more comfortable, and I actually look forward to wearing them…even if it is just around the yard.

UGMONK Desk Set - Upgrade your desk with this beautiful, well-thought-out desk system.
Col. Littleton Front Pocket Wallet - Well made, small, simple, and durable. Monogramming is a lovely, personal touch.
