Coordinating Shirts and Ties

A question that I get asked quite often is, “how do I match my shirt and tie?”.

Kind of surprising because, like who wears ties anymore?  Am I right?

In theory, it should be an easy and painless thing to do, yet many approach it with trepidation.

Let's dig into it.

White Shirts
A blank canvas gives you leeway. When wearing a solid white shirt, you can play around with your choice of tie without having to worry. Big and small patterns, bold colors – the option is yours, but ask yourself how you want to be received.

I'm not a fan of making a big statement, so tread with caution when going bold. Solid color ties in neutral tones present a sharper aesthetic, I feel.

Solid Color Shirts
Aim for contrast, whether tonal or fabric. If your shirt is more vibrant, go subtle with the tie and vice versa. While your tie can be in the same color family as your shirt and suit, the shades should be different.

With solid color shirts, small patterns on a tie can also work well – ensure if one element is very bold, the other be more subtle.

Patterned shirtsWhen patterns are introduced, things start to get interesting. Steer clear of similarly patterned ties. The safe route would be to keep it simple with a solid color. It’s all about making sure one of the two elements does the talking.

If you’re thinking of trying pattern-on-pattern, make sure that the size and type of the pattern vary — for example, an Oxford striped shirt with a spotted knitted tie. *Super cool look.

Textured shirtsFor the more casual side of things, a textured shirt works great with a textured or solid color tie. You'll look like a pro as well if you get good at matching the fabric’s weight.

Light fabrics, like a cotton poplin shirt and a linen/silk tie, go together during warmer seasons, while colder weather means you can try heavier combinations like Oxford/flannel shirts with knitted/wool ties.

That's a quick little roundup so do let me know if you have any questions.

And as always, whenever in doubt, white shirt it out.
