My 3 Thoughts For October - 4 Things You Can Control - I Bet You’re Arrogant - Solid Advice
You Can’t Un-Hear Beethoven’s 5th
THE SOUNDTRACK
I was working one night, and the steller song Tilt-A-Whirl by Bright Eyes came on. The line “You can’t un-hear Beethoven’s 5th” always stands out. This made me think, hmmm, I have never listened to Beethoven’s entire 5th Symphony. So I did. And I’ve listened to it a few times since. Amazing.
My assumption is you know it. But have you ever really listened to it? If not, I got you this month. ENJOY!
DAVID’S 3 thoughts for OCTOBER 2023
Here are a few thoughts to consider DAILY this month. There are only 3 for a reason. Execute.
-
Your work ethic.
Your care for others.
Your passion and enthusiasm.
Your attitude.
Stay focused on those 4, and everything will fall into place.

I’ve been writing lately - not so much about style but more about personal brand, development, business, etc.
Here is my latest rant. (Follow me on LinkedIn as I’m going to start posting there more.)
I used to view procrastination as a harmless delay, but I've come to understand that it's a form of arrogance – and I believe you might relate to this, too.
Here's a breakdown of my journey:
My Old View of Procrastination
Procrastination is often labeled laziness or poor time management, rarely as a psychological or emotional issue.
Underlying Arrogance
By procrastinating, I assumed I had an endless supply of time. In reality, time owes us no favors, and that was my arrogance.
The Deception of "I'll Do It Later"
I falsely believed my future self would handle tasks better, placing false confidence in that future version of myself.
The Risk Factor
Postponing important tasks exposed me to underperformance risks despite my claim that I worked well under pressure – a lie driven by arrogance.
The Irony -
My desire for perfection led me to procrastinate, paradoxically hindering the very perfection I sought.
How I Broke The Cycle
A life-changing moment made me realize that time is a limited resource. Embracing the mantra, "Done is better than perfect" (credit to @MattGray), helped me break free.
I Needed Humility
Acknowledging my limitations marked my first step toward improvement. It's okay not to be able to do everything "later."
Conclusion and Call to Action
Assuming time is on your side is an arrogant perspective.
Procrastination can be more than a bad habit; it's a mindset that needs changing.
Remember, "Done is better than perfect."
I'm curious to hear your thoughts! Have you ever considered procrastination as a form of arrogance?

“I'm reminded of a piece of advice my father gave me regarding shoes: it has stood me in good stead whenever my own finances were low. He said it's better to buy one good pair of shoes than four cheap ones. One pair made of fine leather could outlast four inferior pairs and, if well cared for, would continue to proclaim your good judgment and taste no matter how old they become. The same applies to suits, so permit me to suggest you buy the best you can afford, even if it means buying less. Rather like the stock market: it is usually more sensible to buy just one share of blue-chip than 150 shares of a one-dollar stock.”
THIS MONTHS LINKS
A collection of items worthy of a purchase, a read, or an action.
-
Twos app - an excellent app I’ve been using lately to capture and organize information I want to remember quickly.
Saddest Movies of All Time - According to science, these are the saddest movies ever. I’m not sure what to do with this list, to be honest.
Etiquette from around the world - For you international travelers out there. This insightful map reveals different etiquette practices around the world.
Back to Work Wardrobe - Mr. Porter - Some of these looks are a stretch, but you get the idea. I do like the breakdowns by “type” of worker. Maybe I’ll create my own doc for this?
Google Doc Hack - I made these changes to be more “on brand,” and I’ll be honest, it has made working in Docs better. Why did I ever have page breaks to begin with?
Tan Lines 😂 - When a “fancy” designer sets the Ryder team up in the wrong shoes.
Routine Club - I'm not sure what it is, but I really enjoy reading about other’s personal routines. This blog scratches that itch.
-
Outerknown Shirt - Most don’t have a dark gray/washed black stripe shirt. This one is done well in a casual button-down collar setup. Even has a hidden inside pocket. Dig it.
Community Clothing Waxed Raincoat - Huge value here. 3/4 length, waxed with side entry pockets. This is a no-fuss raincoat that won’t break the bank. They have a great mission that I fully support: “We have a simple mission. To make the very best quality everyday clothing; to make it from the very best natural materials in the very best factories right here in the UK; and to sell it at great prices that everyone can afford 365 days a year.”
Wythe Half Zip - Rounded hem, rounded pockets, all-around cool. Comes in a variety of washed-out colors.
Norse Algot Relaxed Wool Shirt - Awesome plaid check. A relaxed-fitting shirt cut in a lightweight, open-structured wool cloth woven in Italy. Features mother-of-pearl buttons and a chest pocket.
Sunspel Cable Knit Cardigan Jacket - Knitted with a chunky, open cable stitch, this merino wool cardigan jacket is a contemporary take on a traditional Sunspel classic. Made in England, it has a funnel neck collar and horn buttons. Warm and comfortable, it is the ideal transeasonal outer layer.
PAYNTER Wool Chore Coat - Batch 16- Support small makers. These sell out super quickly. A refined cold season staple, made with a luxurious Italian Wool Cashmere fabric. Available to pre-order to subscribers only until the 9th of October at 9 PM (BST).
-
3Sixteen Classic Tapered Fade Resistant Denim - Touted as “fade resistant.” The CT model offers an actual medium rise, a little extra room in the top block of the jeans, and a tapered leg for a smallish leg opening.
FIT by Aaron Levine for Ten Thousand - I’m placing this in the “bottoms” category, as I love their shorts that much. Aaron is one of my favorite fashion creatives, and I'm here to see brand collaborations like this. This brings authenticity to the brand as it’s not always about muscles and peak everything. Just normal cats trying to stay healthy in this fast-paced world.
Icebreaker 260 Tech Base Layer Leggings - Speaking of working out. If any of you are doing those AM workouts outside heading into Fall, these will become a lifesaver. Also, nice lounge pants, to be honest. A heavier midweight base layer perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, or winter layering, the men's Icebreaker 260 Tech leggings are made from warm, odor-resistant merino wool and sport a convenient fly. The fly is crucial!
Madewell Slim Fit Stretch Chino - fitted through the hip and thigh with a straight leg, these are classic, can't-go-wrong slim pants. The fabric: Sourced from the Kurabo mill in Japan, this stretchy chino material has moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating COOLMAX® technology to keep you feeling air-conditioned in the summer (and warm and dry the rest of the year). I like the black/coal color, and the price is solid.
Norse Projects Slim Light Stretch Trouser - The Aros Slim Light Stretch is a classic, slim chino pant constructed with a stretch organic cotton twill with a mid-rise and slim leg. Finished with a zip fly and refined internal detailing.
-
Todd Syder x Danner Boots - I've always enjoyed the Danner Mountain Light boot. This season, designer Todd Snyder got his hands on them and released an olive suede version—unique but not over the top.
Leny's — The I’m not doing shit today shoes. Shoes for going nowhere is a fantastic mission.
Grenson’s Aldwych Leather Brogues - Grenson harnesses over 150 years of expertise to craft its shoes. These 'Aldwych' brogues from polished bookbinder leather have been made in the brand's Northamptonshire factory and have triple Goodyear welt and double-leather soles. You had me at triple Goodyear welt.
John Lobb Oxford’s - Such a beautiful burnished brown Oxford. “The City II is a timeless Oxford shoe crafted to perfection. Exquisitely balanced proportions are highlighted with signature twin stitch details throughout.”
Madewell x G.H. Bass Collab - Looking for something a little different? Madewell collabs with storied GH Bass + Co. for a great-looking moc. These leather moccasins feature a lightweight EVA lug sole for the perfect intersection of durability, comfort, and style.
-
Filson's new tin cloth line briefcase - I was asked what was an excellent briefcase for someone new to the working world (recent grad), and well, this one is ideal. Keep this idea when you need to gift it to your younger version.
WP Standard Hanging Toiletry Bag - This Leather Toiletry Kit is a solid home for toiletries while on the road. Using full-grain leather and an easy-to-clean liner in the event of any toothpaste disasters. They made this bag lean in size so that it won't take up too much room in your bag. It includes two internal zippered pockets for loose Q-tips, razor blades, and the like, and two large easy-access pockets. Monogramming is available, which is an excellent “gift-giving” touch.
Rains Waterproof Duffle Backpack - Bold and matte logo details sweep over the top of a convertible, weather-ready duffle bag that can be carried over the shoulders as a backpack.
-
Our Place Wonder Oven - A 6-in-1 air fryer and toaster that actually looks cool!
10 Best Tequilas For Whiskey Drinkers - I’ve been into tequila a little more than I’d like to admit lately and as whiskey is my first love, I thought this was relevant for me. Maybe for you as well?
A Man and His Kitchen - This is an invitation to Matt Hranek’s storied country retreat, the Wm Brown Farm in upstate New York. Learn how to cook the hundred-plus recipes he considers his greatest hits—simple, straightforward, and, most of all, delicious dishes to feed yourself, your family, and your friends. This will be on my gifting list this Christmas.
Octoberfest Food Pairing - What would be an October post without a nod to Oktoberfest? (even if it does predominantly occur in September, but whatevs.)
Rabbit Liquor Infusing Decanteur - I mean, who doesn’t want to infuse their own liquor?
-
Arcteryx cafe - Woah, when brand and experience go to the next level.
Octoberfest Food Pairing - What would be an October post without a nod to Oktoberfest? (even if it does predominantly occur in September, but whatevs)
AirFly Pro Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter - is a neat little gadget that came recommended by an avid flyer. No more cords or issues pairing your wireless buds. Thank me later.
